Living Lightbulbs: Bioluminescent Timelapse Glow Worm Artwork V11662 Insects make up some of the largest and most diverse families of creatures on earth, with many strange and fascinating traits. One of those traits is the ability to generate light with an internal chemical reaction. These small (1/2″ long) worm-like creatures were found in the mountains near Santa Clarita, CA and appear to be the California Pink Glowworm, (Microphotus angustus – (thanks to xKmotx for the ID!) a female beetle of the Lampyridae family, which also includes the well-known Firefly (a beetle as well). More great info in these fascinating creatures can be found on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly The insects shown here were filmed using long exposure photography with Canon S5-is and 300HS cameras. Exposure times varied between 5 and 10 seconds per frame. The resulting image sequences were made into timelapse video, showing their light emission and movement during the roughly 90-minute period in which they make light, beginning at dusk. The timelapse image sequences were then processed into GlowWorm Artwork using compositing techniques developed by JCMDI. A wide variety of these Glow Worm Artwork videos can be found on the JcmdiStockFootage channel.
